2023 Stories

One World Project is a special place for our family!  Over the last 3 years, we’ve seen both of our kids grow with the help of this wonderful and nurturing community. Since Lara ran the 1/2 marathon last year, Elijah has been begging us to run a race and we’re so excited that both Elijah and Estella (and James) can run in order to raise money and awareness about their wonderful Escuelita by participating in OWP 1/2 mile Fun Run

Please support Elijah, Estella and James as they run/walk/scoot to the finish line in support of One World Project!

One World Project is a special place in our corner of Brooklyn. It’s where our girls were lucky enough to first go to school and experience warmth and love from their amazing teachers, plant vegetables in their garden, scoot endlessly on their patio and even learn a little Spanish along the way. We’re excited that the kids can now participate in an event that they themselves can raise money for and ensure that kids (like most importantly, their little brother and soon-to-be little sister) can enjoy all the amazing things OWP does everyday by running the OWP 1/2 Mile Fun Run on April 22nd.

When we asked Adriana and Daniela what their favorite things about One World Project is, they said:
Adriana: “I do love doing the art and I’m impressed that I made a real pillow.”
Daniela: “I like my teachers and when I am sad they draw a smiley face for me and hold my hand.”
Please support Adriana, Daniela & Andrew as they run/walk/scoot to the finish line in support of One World Project!

I’m excited to run the NYC Runs Brooklyn Half marathon in support of my son’s preschool, One World Project. Running is a huge part of my life: it’s how I stay fit to keep up with my son Myles, is the reason my wife Krissa and I got together, we got married during the NYRR Brooklyn Half in 2017 (ran, stopped, got married, kept running), and now allows me to give back to Myles’ school through fundraising. One World Project has been crucial to his social development and confidence, and my wife and I have made some great friends as a result of him being a part of this wonderful school.

I’m running the Brooklyn Half Marathon — again! — to raise money for One World Project, my daughter Maya’s outstanding school. One World Project fosters cultural awareness, multilingualism, and social emotional development through inquiry-based learning. This small but mighty school is all heart, and I’ve watched both of my daughters blossom here over the last three years. Thanks to OWP’s commitment to equity, dedicated teachers, and student-centered approach, each child has the chance to shine bright. As a former teacher, I’m a firm believer that kids who learn compassion, self-awareness, and a respect for others and the planet are better equipped to learn everything else.

I was so inspired by last year’s race that I decided to do it again! Please join me in supporting this bilingual and multicultural community so that they can offer more scholarships, and the program can continue at full capacity.

Ara is so excited about his mama is running a big race that he decided he too would join in the fun! The 5K kids Fun Run to be precise, which will take place on April 22nd, the day before Mirah runs the Brooklyn Half Marathon with her team. We are doing the Kids Fun Run and the Brooklyn Half as a fundraiser for Ara’s beloved preschool, One World Project, a Spanish immersion school in Windsor Terrace where Ara is in his second year.

New York City’s guaranteed universal pre-K program has some unfortunate cracks in its system, namely that the city does not provide the full amount of funding necessary for all the schools to run their programs. It is left to the schools to fundraise in order to fill those gaps so that they can give our children the high quality of care and learning that they deserve. We parents, family, caregivers and teachers or OWP are running our race as a fundraiser, and so are our kids!  Please donate to Ara’s 5K Fun Run fundraiser, no amount is too small or too large! We are hoping to do our part in helping the school raise $100,000 this year in honor of the schools 10 year anniversary. Thank you!

On April 22nd Ariana is running a half mile Fun Run to raise money for her school, One World Project. We are so grateful to be part of the OWP family.

Your support will give Ariana the motivation to run and benefit OWP’s Scholarship Fund.

No donation amount is too small. Our goal is to have fun and raise $10,000 to honor OWP’s 10th Anniversary!

Gracias!

Friends & Family,
This April I will be running the Brooklyn Half Marathon in support of One World Project (OWP).  Why do such a thing?  Good question – it HAS been over 5 years since my last half marathon!  However, the world needs more schools like OWP.  It’s hard to overstate how amazing the OWP family has been for Pablo. Although we have moved on to Kindergarten, the foundation of a loving, creative, thriving pre-K at OWP has given Pablo a solid foundation in life.  So this time around I’m not fundraising to help Pablo directly, I’m fundraising for the future – to give more children the same opportunities that were afforded to our little Pablito.  Every donation  – even small ones – helps me get closer to my goal of $1,000 raised.  Thank you so much for your time.

Camila has always liked to run. Just ask our downstairs neighbor 😉 However, the real test will be if she can run or scoot a half mile “race” without getting distracted or plagued by the terrible tired-foot syndrome known simply as “mis pies están cansados”
We’re quite sure that her wonderful friends and community at One World Project, Camila’s amazing bilingual preschool, will help push and carry her along as they have the for the past year and a half.
And we also hope that the money raised will support the school like with the inadequate subsidies that the state provides for Universal Pre-K programs, or by paying the teachers a living wage with benefits.
Any little bit will help and we’ll be sure to get some photos or Camila en camino, as long as her feet don’t “get tired”

I haven’t been much of a runner since my early twenties, I think that means probably not since last century, but this year I’ve been motivated to run 13.1 miles in the Brooklyn Half-Marathon to support One World Project our son Adlai attends preschool.

Our collective goal is to raise over $50,000 to support One World’s scholarship program, to provide financial assistance to improve equal access for all children.

One World Project is so much more than just a school, it’s been the foundation of Adlai’s early childhood education. He started attending One World right after he turned two as schools began re-opening in the fall of 2020 and One World’s incredible stability and support of socio-emotional development and independence has been second to none – at a level of care all children should be able to have. With OWP’s fundraising program they are able to provide increased access to their programs by way of universal pre-k and scholarships to those in need.

Please join me in supporting One World Project!

I’m back to coach this amazing team of parents, teachers and administrators to run 13.1 miles through Brooklyn because One World Project means so much to my family and to our community. Last year our team of almost 60 runners raised over $66K for the scholarship fund and it was an incredibly rewarding and emotional experience. I love running so much, particularly this type of event, because it’s a sport that almost anyone can do if you have the right game plan and you work hard to make baby steps toward your goal. It’s particularly fun to lead runners that are doing this for the first time (or for the first time in a long time). I’ll be sitting out on the running portion this year since I’m pregnant with baby #4 (due in June!!) but I’ll be coaching, fundraising and cheering from the sidelines. I hope you will consider supporting our efforts to hit our ambitious goal in support of scholarships for OWP’s 10th year!

On April 22nd as part of our Brooklyn Half weekend, Cleo is running (or scooting) a ½ mile Fun Run (around the block of her school) to raise money for her amazing school, One World Project.

OWP is a Spanish immersion preschool that prioritizes building community as they develop global citizens and stewards of the environment. Unfortunately, the DOE’s reimbursement rate for its Universal Pre-K program, does not cover the costs that make the program so special (music classes, a community garden, healthcare for the staff.) OWP is committed to keeping its UPK program at no cost to families but it cannot do it without additional financial support.

Cleo and her classmates are raising money to ensure this school can continue to offer high quality programs, fully support its teachers, and offer scholarships to ensure socioeconomic diversity of the community.  Contributing to the school’s 10th anniversary fundraiser will extend this opportunity to many more families, advancing educational equity and diversity at a life stage that truly matters.

We write to ask you to join us in supporting OWP and, if you are able, donating to the Fun Run fundraiser (tax deductible) to support this very special place.

No donation amount is too small.  Our goal is to have fun and raise $10,000 to honor OWP’s 10th Anniversary!

“Believe it or not, I am running in the Brooklyn Half Marathon on April 23! I am doing this in support of my daughter’s preschool, One World Project (http://oneworldproject.org). This is my daughter’s second year at One World Project and she is loving the experience. She comes back with stories about music, mulch, medienda, and other detailed accounts of pre-school life. It is not just about it being a Spanish Immersion program — it is about creating a community of engaged learners. The teaching and the pedagogy is incredibly inspiring. and the teachers are truly dedicated. I am happy and proud to run in support of this school.
The money we raise will go to the scholarship fund to allow more kids to have this experience. The school is hoping to raise $100,000, of which I am hoping to raise $1000.”
Best wishes,
Daniel

I’m not going to lie. I don’t like running. I’ve attempted to become a runner many times in my life. Regardless of whether I was super fit or sedentary in that moment, I could never muster the will or interest to run regularly. When the idea of training for and participating in the Brooklyn Half marathon to fundraise for Cazadora and Oro’s amazing Spanish immersion preschool One World Project came up, I immediately thought, Uh, nope nope nope-itty nope and also no thank you. But honestly the enthusiasm of the organizers and the parents and the administrators really bent my resolve to avoid at all costs! And now, here I am. Trying to find time in fits and starts to get my legs and heart in shape to cross the finish line in April.**
And here’s why: One World Project is incredible. Our kids are fully fluent in large part because of their continued education at One World. It’s an incredibly nurturing environment that has gone above and beyond during the last few years. Society hasn’t done a great job of supporting parents and kids and educators in the last, oh, well, in a long time, so I hope you’ll think about supporting me and my fellow parents as we try to give back to a this amazing Spanish immersion haven for us all in Brooklyn.
**Cazadora LOVES to run and so I think of her when I do it, so it isn’t all bad.

The last few years have been incredibly difficult for me personally — and unbelievably life-giving! The support of friends and family and my enhanced focus on my own health and well-being have me on the precipice of an athletic feat I definitely could not have imagined I’d be taking on just a year ago!

My dear friend Michelle, a parent a OWP, has cheered me on during this rough period and has made me believe it is possible for me to run a half-marathon!  Even better, we are raising funds for a cause close to my heart – creating educational communities that support and advance language justice – and that make those opportunities available to all.

OWP is a school that teaches entirely in Spanish (also known as an immersion school) – one of the few in Brooklyn, and they need financial support to continue and to make this special community accessible to more families.  Help me support OWP in honor of their mission, my dear friendship with Michelle, and the transformative power that loving attention can have on all our lives.

Elena loves running around, but can she run in a straight line? We’re going to find out and raise some money for a good cause along the way. Her school, One World Project, is hosting a fun run for kids before the Brooklyn Half Marathon this April to raise money for their scholarship fund. Any donations are deeply appreciated

This April, I’ll be running the Brooklyn Half Marathon to support Carmen’s preschool One World Project (and to celebrate turning 40! Woohoo!). We have been so happy as new members of the One World Project community. Carmen is thriving during her first year at school, and spends her days playing outside, singing and dancing in Spanish and English, operating the compost, and exploring concepts like light and friendship within a safe and intentional community of teachers.

OWP was founded as both a child-centered school dedicated to play, and as a community center hoping to serve the immense diversity of Brooklyn. In service to these ideals, OWP offers scholarships to make the school and after school more economically accessible. Last year’s Brooklyn Half fundraising campaign raised nearly $68,000 for the scholarship funds, helping more than 20 families enjoy the excellent programming that OWP offers. This year, as OWP celebrates its 10th year, I am hoping to raise $1,000 towards OWP’s goal of $100,000. If you have the means, please consider donating to my race. Your contribution will support One World Project in offering a really special learning community for children just embarking on their exploration of this world.

Dear family and friends,

Many of you know how important Luke’s preschool, One World Project, is to him and to our whole family. It’s a loving, nurturing community where children learn through play and curiosity and by working together. A Spanish immersion preschool, it emphasizes offering respect and building connections across differences. It also supports its teachers and staff through extensive training and professional development opportunities and wages that recognize the importance of the work they do.
That’s why I will be joining Team OWP to run the Brooklyn Half-Marathon and raise money for OWP’s scholarship fund, which enables children from families at all income levels to benefit from everything OWP offers. The half-marathon is in April, and my fellow OWP runners and I have already been out in Prospect Park (including in flurries!) slowly building up our strength for the race. I am writing to ask you to join me in supporting OWP and, if you are able, donating the half-marathon fundraiser to support this very special place.
I’m delighted to support OWP, in some small measure, after all the support they’ve given Luke. But I am also running because I know that, especially in the depth of winter and after a tough 2022, I need to make sure I’m getting out into the fresh air and getting my heart pumping. I hadn’t been able to motivate myself to do that on my own. But now that I can go meet my OWP buddies, I find myself eagerly lacing up my shoes and heading to the park. OWP has provided Luke a community in which he can learn and grow and, now it’s providing me a community in which I can do the same. I would be so grateful if you would be a part of this too.

One World Project (OWP) is a magical place that both Emma and Lukas have been lucky enough to spend the earliest years of their school life. They’ve experienced warmth and love from their amazing teachers, the joy of exploring worms and getting dirty in a garden, learning to scooter across the backyard patio, and practicing the Spanish they learn at home. While Emma has already graduated from the formal programming and is in after school now, Lukas will be attending their preschool program for another 1.5 years before we transition him to the afterschool as well.
We plan to continue sending our kids to OWP for as long as we can, and this year for OWP’s 10th Anniversary we all want to help raise money for another 10+ wonderful years of One World. To that end, EMma and Lukas will be running/scooting/walk the OWP 1/2 Mile Fun Run on April 22nd and we’d love your support in helping them cross the fundraising finish line in support of OWP!

Esme and Emmett are running the One World Project Fun Run to support this amazing pre-school and community where Esme went and Emmett now attends. The school has been an amazing community for both kids helping them become confident bilingual individuals and has done an incredible job keeping a safe, warm and welcoming environment during the pandemic. This is the school’s 10th anniversary and we want to support the school’s continued success!

Our daughter Evelyn (Evie) is running a half mile “race” on half marathon weekend to benefit One World Project, her terrific Spanish immersion school. One World has nurtured her love of art projects, discovery, sharing, and storytelling. Every school day she has an anecdote about an act of care and friendship that brings a smile to her face and ours. The Fun Run race is an important way to raise money to close funding gaps for NYC’s pre-K and ensure each classroom continues to have incredible resources and teachers. This is a wonderful community that we are especially grateful to be a part of in the wake of the pandemic, so any donation in Evie’s name will be deeply appreciated!

Dear friends and family,

On April 22nd as part of our Brooklyn Half weekend, Frida is running a ½ mile Fun Run (around the block of her school) to raise money for her amazing school, One World Project.

Frida and her classmates are raising money to ensure this school can continue to offer high quality programs, fully support its teachers, and offer scholarships to ensure socioeconomic diversity of the community.

Thank you so much,
Frida (and family)

Hi! I am running for Althie’s school, One World Project, a Spanish immersion preschool in Windsor Terrace, which she loves and so do we. This will be my first race in over four years, and I am really excited to get back out there and support a cause super important to me, Kimmy, and Althie!

Isla and Suvi are running the 1/2 Mile Fun Run on April 22nd to raise money for their beloved school on its 10 Year Anniversary, and we hope you’ll join us in supporting their efforts! One World Project is a Spanish language immersion school in our neighborhood in Brooklyn that focuses on community, caring, and cultivating understanding through multilingualism. Isla graduated from their preschool program and is currently an afterschool student, while Suvi is in her second preschool year at OWP and about to enter their Universal Pre-K program. Isla and Suvi love their time at the school and have formed wonderful relationships with the amazing teachers, made lasting friendships with children of all different levels of Spanish-speaking, and created countless memories playing in the school’s garden and cooking recipes in the classroom. We are so grateful OWP exists, and want to do everything we can to make sure all families regardless of economic background are able to experience this unique approach to learning and nurturing community at OWP.  Your support will not only give Isla and Suvi the motivation to run, walk or scoot across the finish line, but will directly benefit OWP’s Scholarship Fund and help close the funding gap for the Universal Pre-K program to make the school accessible to more families.

I am Isobel Circe Ingoldsby-Vela. To my family I am Bel, but my school friends call me Circe. I love to dance, sing and act silly. I am becoming a very good swimmer. I love to run and ride my scooter. Most of all, I love my friends and my school — One World Project.

I like to pretend I am a superhero, a princess, a fairy, and sometimes a superhero fairy princess. As Circe the superhero princess I am fast like the Flash, but I wear my cape and mask with a tutu dress and tiara. I am so excited to be a superhero for my school by helping it raise money so that other kids can enjoy One World Project as much as I have. Please support me as I run/walk/scoot with my friends in the One World Project ½ Mile Fun Run on April 22d. I’ll be the fast kid with the wild curls in the tutu dress.

I’m doing it again!

I am running 13.1 miles in support of One World Project, the magical school that we have trusted to care for and nurture my little humans (Emma, 6 and Lukas, 3) throughout their young years.

One World Project fosters cultural awareness, multilingualism, and social emotional development through inquiry-based learning.  I am deeply grateful for all they have provided my family and want to help OWP expand accessibility through the growth of their scholarship fund.

Super appreciative of all donations.  Every dollar counts.  Thank you y Muchisimas Gracias!

I’m doing it again!  Never in my life did I think I would be writing that I am training for my second Half Marathon.
The fact that I signed up to run the Brooklyn Half-Marathon again reflects my deep love for One World Project and strong belief in what we are doing here.
Please join me in supporting our beloved school and help us build a robust scholarship fund to exponentially increase the economic diversity in OWP’s programs.  We know that OWP’s tuition precludes many families from enrolling and yet a truly economically diverse classroom is critically important to meaningful learning and provides tremendous benefit to all.

Help Joaquin race to the finish line!

We are so lucky that Joaquin goes to school at the amazing One World Project. Every day is an incredible exploration for the kids who paint and construct with recycled materials, dance and sing to live music, tend the gardens and cook meals for each other. They are taught and cared for by the most wonderful and caring teachers. We are fundraising to share this  amazing environment with as many families as possible; to ensure that financial need is not a barrier. Thanks so much for your support – any amount is greatly appreciated!

One of the first things that I discovered about the Brooklyn Half Marathon was that it starts at SEVEN AM and that I live very far from the starting line. So my second biggest challenge will be to actually get there in time to start the thing. The biggest challenge of course is that I run like a cement bunker that’s been buried under fifty feet of sand–if cement bunkers were able, somehow, to whimper and scream and sweat in unimaginable quantities . Still, One World Project has been so incredibly important to my family and myself. And I want to help make sure that it not only continues to exist but that this exceptional institution and the community it creates and fosters can be accessible to todos los chamaquitos posible.

So, please donate as much as you can, to support my efforts to wake up, put on running shoes, and make it to Williamsburg Brooklyn by 6-something in the morning on a weekend. I believe I can [probably] do this. But only with your support.

Julian & Maia are putting their love for running to work to raise funds for their amazing school, One World Project! The kids will be running a 1/2 mile Fun Run to raise funds to help make this incredible dual language school more accessible to families of all socio-economic backgrounds. No donation is too small!

Hi, It’s Kamila & Liv, we are running the Brooklyn Half Mile Fun Run for One World Project, our beloved school.

One World Project is a Spanish Immersion School in Brooklyn. It’s where Kamila & Liv started school and made their first friends.
The experience at OWP has been nothing short of amazing. Kamila & Liv have the most supportive and loving teachers.
One World Project has enriched and nurtured Kamila and Liv’s learning with activities such as gardening, cooking, singing, dancing and learning Spanish.
The girls are participating in the OWP 1/2 Mile Fun Run on April 22nd.

Please donate whatever you can to support Kamila & Liv as they run in support of One World Project!
Any amount is deeply appreciated. No donation is too small or too big.

Abrazos

If you know me, you know that running is a big part of my life. It has always been there for me, keeping me fit and healthy. It was there for me when my husband and I got married at mile 6 of the NYRR BK half marathon in 2017. It influenced the naming of our son, Myles. So there is little that could get me more excited than a half marathon fundraiser for Myles’s school. One World Project (OWP) is a joyful, creative home away from home for Myles. OWP has been crucial to his social development and confidence. My husband and I have also made lifelong friends as a result of Myles being a part of this wonderful school.
Running the Brooklyn half with OWP gives me the chance to bring together the things I’m most passionate about in life—running, Myles, and Myles’s wonderful school community. Since Myles was born,  I’ve always run for him—so he would have a happy, healthy, strong mom as a role model. Now I’m running for him and his friends in a whole new way.

I’m running the half marathon…..again!  I’m running to raise money for One World Project (OWP), my children’s amazing school. I was so inspired by running last year’s half marathon with my OWP family, that I knew I couldn’t pass up this opportunity to run for a cause I’m truly passionate about.

OWP has been a second home to our family over the last 3 years and my hope is that we can make this wonderful school accessible to more families.  OWP’s commitment to fostering diversity, equity and high-quality, multi-lingual early childhood education is inspiring.  Please join me in supporting them in achieving their goal of growing their scholarship fund.

Hola! Sid (5), Pru (7) and I (with Ronnie as our support member!) are running for One World, Sid’s Spanish immersion preschool. Sid and Pru will run a half-mile race on Saturday April 22 and I will follow them on Sunday running the Brooklyn Half Marathon. We all love this school and this community so much we want to help it any way we can.
Sid, has been lucky enough to enjoy this warm, welcoming space since he was two, following the COVID-19 school closures. It has been such a supportive and comforting environment for him — and my daughter Pru, who continues to attend the afterschool, and, frankly, the grown ups! — during this (continually!) rocky time. One World Project focuses on fostering social emotional development, Spanish language abilities and engagement with our community. They have been amazing during the pandemic and have taken on a number of extra costs to support staff and teachers including providing regular testing, and compensating staff and teachers for all sick time and school closures. One World also does lovely and human things like paying their teachers a decent salary and providing health care. Please help support the school in any way that you are able — a little goes a long way. And if you are in the neighborhood, come check it out and consider joining the community! Thank you!
From Pru (to me: You’re probably going to cry)
“I’ve known One World for a very long time. I love everyone there and everyone is very nice and it will always have a place in my heart.” [tear!}
“I am excited and I do a lot of running so I’m excited and I want to help One World because One I love One World and it’s just my favorite place to be.”
From Sid:
“One World is special to me because I’ve known my friends for a long time.”
“I feel happy and brave to be running a race.”

We’re excited to put our miles and hearts behind our beloved escuelita. This April, we will be fundraising in support of One World Project by running the Brooklyn Half Marathon.

One World Project is so important to our family, and has been a constant source of learning, language, support and love for many years to both Luna and Ava. With your help, we can make sure that more children are able to take part in this amazing learning experience by raising funds for scholarships.
We hope you’ll join us in supporting One World Project by donating — thank you!

Dear Friends and Family,

On April 23rd, I am running the Brooklyn Half Marathon to support Jonah’s preschool and Nico’s after school program, One World Project. I have never run even close to 13.1 miles and honestly it’s incredibly daunting to me. But over the past few weeks, I’ve started training and each day I am slowly pushing myself to go further than I ever thought possible.

Please join me in supporting this wonderful school community. One World is a nurturing, loving Spanish immersion early education program that fosters student creativity and inquiry. Teachers know their pre-schoolers well and celebrate their differences and their authentic selves. Jonah and Nico love their teachers so much. Jonah has been fortunate to attend OWP since he was two and Nico is a regular in their after school community. As a teacher myself, I’ve long appreciated One World’s commitment to offering its teachers competitive salaries, health care, and professional development.

A core mission of OWP is also to provide financial aid to all families who wish to attend its program. Making OWP more accessible means the world to me and I am honored and motivated to join the cause (even if it means I have to run 13 miles!). This is where your help comes in. Please join me in supporting them to achieve their goal of growing their scholarship fund.

I want to make Nico and Jonah proud and want to honor the school community that has given them so much love and support over the past three years. Any amount you can donate would be incredibly appreciated. Thank you!

I ran my first race in memory of my mother 20 years ago, one year from the date she passed away, and last year I ran my first race as a mother – to raise money for my daughter’s amazing preschool and to start to share with my daughter the gift of health that was such a connection for me to my mom.
This year, I am adding another reason – to give the immersive gift of language to as many families as possible by raising money for the scholarship fund. I am blown away every day that my daughter speaks Spanish, and One World Project has been such a nurturing part of it.
I started trying to learn Spanish over 20 years ago after meeting my partner whose family is from Chile. I love people, and not being able to communicate because of a language barrier seemed like an easy hurdle – just learn the language to connect with his family and new friends and better understand their cultures – how wonderful!  But despite years of classes and self-teaching and apps and conversations with native speakers, I can still only speak a hilarious hybrid of English and Spanish.
But always there was a distant dream in mind and a reason to learn – if I ever had a child, I wanted to raise them bilingual in hopes that the connection and communication with more people and cultures could come easily.  When our daughter was born and the COVID shutdown happened 7 months later, it felt like a crazy experiment for us to be together ALL the time, speaking separate languages to our baby.  But at some point before she turned 2, she was saying many words in both languages but dreaming in Spanish and soon after started the 2s program at OWP.

The school has exceeded all expectations through fantastic programming in art, music, nature and culture, and also in the relationships our daughter has built with friends and her caring teachers. But then there is language – about halfway into her first year there, my husband realized she was correctly using a verb tense in Spanish that he struggles with, and we knew as she began to joyously switch back and forth from Spanish to English depending on who she’s talking to, that she was getting so much of it from school.

Fast forward to a recent teacher’s conference about how my daughter interacts at school – her teacher said “Language is her super power, and she uses it to help everyone around her.”

My distant dream is happening – what I haven’t been able to achieve for myself is still possible for my daughter.

And so I am running again this year so that this transformative, nurturing education and community can be accessible to families of all socio-economic backgrounds. Raising $100,000 for this 10th Anniversary fundraiser will go towards the scholarship fund and to help with the underfunding of the Universal Pre-K program that my daughter will be going to next year!

Last year I wasn’t sure I would be able to run the full 13.1 miles after years of not running and amidst a crazy work/parenting schedule, and I am forever grateful for the support of friends and family that helped get me to that finish line.

So now while learning Spanish for me is still a hurdle, running this half marathon again to enhance the possibilities for other families is an achievable goal that I deeply believe in – – –

If you have the means, please consider donating.  Gracias from our family and many others!

Luke’s preschool, One World Project, has a very special place in our family’s hearts. Thanks to the warmth, support, and encouragement of the teachers, administrators, and entire community around One World, our little Luke has blossomed into the thoughtful, funny, Spanish-speaking almost-five-year-old that he is today.

We feel enormously lucky to be part of the One World community, and would like to help other families have the same opportunity. Luke has been training to run this 1/2 mile Fun Run on April 22 so that we can help raise money for more children to experience all the amazing things that One World has to offer through its scholarship fund and Pre-K for All program.

Please consider donating to support Luke as he runs to the finish line in support of One World Project!

Dear Family and Friends,

On April 22nd Maisie will join her preschool pals and run a 1/2 mile Fun Run to raise funds for her truly wonderful, remarkable, one-of-a-kind school: One World Project. As many of you already know, One World Project has been such a gift to our family. It is a Spanish immersion preschool (Maisie now teaches us Spanish at home) that facilitates learning through play, art, exploration, imagination, getting dirty in the garden, and a whole lot of love.

One World Project (OWP) is also part of NYCs universal free pre-K program. But NYC’s free pre-K program isn’t perfect, and actually doesn’t provide the full amount of funding schools like OWP need to provide their incredible education programming. The Fun Run raises funds to make it possible for kids of all economic backgrounds to have access to this incredible learning environment. We are so thankful that we have had the opportunity to be a part of this community, and want to support them in getting across their fundraising finish line. I am writing to ask you to join me in supporting OWP and, if you are able, donating to the Fun Run fundraiser to support this very special place. We would be so grateful for any support you can offer. No amount is too small or too large!

They say it takes a village to raise a child, and growing up I had a village helping my parents raise me. I was surrounded by grandparents, aunts, cousins and neighborhood friends. Now that I’m a mother myself raising a child, most of my village is far away from me. One World Project has become the village I needed to surround my little girl with the warmth, love, patience  and support to help her in her very first years of school.

I feel very fortunate to be a part of the OWP community because it connects my daughter to my culture and language.  I want to support this program and share it with as many people as possible. That’s why, even though I’ve never really enjoyed running, I am excited to support this great community by running the Brooklyn Half Marathon in the end of April. The money we raise will make sure our wonderful teachers are paid a fair wage with benefits, support the school and its facilities, and give a chance for kids that can’t afford the school through the scholarship program.

Your support support will mean a lot, any donation, no matter how small is greatly appreciated and will go a long way to make sure this school can continue doing its wonderful work.

Last year I went to cheer my colleagues that ran the half brooklyn marathon. It was such an exciting and moving experience that made me want to run the half marathon this year!

Maya was so excited to start school as a two year old and One World Project welcomed her with warmth and love. She has grown so much in her three years at the school. She’s been lucky enough to have some amazing teachers, plant vegetables in their garden, get gloriously dirty playing outside, do experiments, scoot on their patio, male friends, and improve her Spanish along the way. We’re excited that she can now participate in an event that she herself can raise money for and ensure that kids (like her little brother!) can enjoy all the amazing things OWP does everyday by running the OWP 1/2 Mile Fun Run on April 22nd.

Please support Maya as she runs/walks to the finish line in support of One World Project!

On April 23rd I am running the Brooklyn Half Marathon to celebrate all that my daughter Lenna has overcome and to raise money for her amazing school, One World Project. OWP is a Spanish immersion preschool that prioritizes building community as they develop global citizens and stewards of the environment. After living in a quarantine bubble for the first two years of her life while she underwent two lung surgeries and then the world shut down for the COVID-19 pandemic, Lenna has blossomed and thrived at OWP over the past two years. We feel very lucky to be part of the community that OWP has created. Unfortunately, the DOE’s reimbursement rate for its Universal Pre-K program, does not cover the costs that make the program so special (music classes, a community garden, healthcare for the staff.) The school has also had to incur additional costs to make sure that the children and the OWP community are as safe as possible during COVID. Our running crew of parents and staff are raising money to ensure this school can continue to offer high quality programs, fully support its teachers, and offer scholarships to ensure socioeconomic diversity of the community. Si se puede!

I’m running the Brooklyn Half Marathon (wooo!!!!) on April 23 to support Brisa Elena’s Spanish immersion preschool, One World Project.

OWP is a special place in Brooklyn. It was founded 10 years ago as a a child-centered school dedicated to play and as a community center hoping to serve the immense diversity of our city. It is also the only Spanish immersion preschool in Brooklyn currently participating in NYC’s universal pre-k program.

Now in her second year, Brisa Elena is absolutely thriving at OWP with the loving care of her teachers and a brilliant community of classmates. Together, they explore in beautifully designed, child-centered classrooms, and outside in the school’s patios and garden.

It takes a lot to offer such high quality programming and to offer it to the broadest range of children possible. Unfortunately, the DOE’s reimbursement rate for its Universal Pre-K program, does not cover the costs that make the program so special (music classes, a community garden, good wages and healthcare for the staff.) While preschool tuition helps bridge the gap, the high cost makes the school inaccessible for many families. To live into its ideals, OWP offers scholarships to make the preschool and after school programs more economically accessible. Even so, it is largely left to the school community to fundraise in order to fill those gaps so that the school can continue to provide as many children the high quality of care and learning that they deserve.

Last year, OWP’s Brooklyn Half Marathon fundraising campaign raised nearly $68,000 for the scholarship funds, helping more than 20 families enjoy the excellent programming that OWP offers. This year, as OWP celebrates its 10th year, I am hoping to raise $1,000 towards OWP’s goal of $100,000.

I AM SO EXCITED TO BE RUNNING THIS RACE. I’m even more delighted to be running alongside my partner Daniel, my dear friend Elena, and so many others from the OWP community. I love the idea that I’m showing Brisa Elena in practice that we are so much more powerful together. Please consider donating to support us in the race, to support Brisa Elena’s school, and to support child-centered Spanish immersion early education in Brooklyn.

With so much gratitude,

Michelle

When I was a kid in the 80’s I was an anti-nuclear activist. I joined a number of weeks and months-long peace marches in the U.S. and abroad, walking mile after mile together with my fellow peace marchers who were mostly adults. At age 12 I felt compelled to work for a more humane world and future. Now at 48 while tenaciously keeping afloat my pandemic-hobbled indie-rock singer-songwriter career and figuring out how the heck to parent a 4 year-old, I don’t find myself exercising my activist muscles much as I did when I was younger. But I do know, now more than ever, that old Robert Fulghum quote is still so unfortunately relevant. You know the one: “It will be a great day when our schools have all the money they need, and our air force has to have a bake-sale to buy a bomber”.

The question of why New York City’s free universal pre-K program leaves most schools with a severe funding gap requires a long and complex answer, that will require many years of hard work to remedy. So, in the meantime we parents, teachers and staff at One World Project are taking the task of filling that funding gap into our own hands, or feet as it were, in the most active and celebratory way we can. Our team is running the Brooklyn Half Marathon on April 23rd and we are asking you to pledge your support! No amount is too small or too large. In addition to closing the funding gap in order to solvently run the pre-K program, OWP strives to provide financial aid for all families who wish to attend its programs, no matter their means.

I started running when I was 30 and have run a few marathons and half marathons in the past, but an injury early in the pandemic kept me from running for the past several years. I am thrilled to be running again and am taking great care to not get injured during this training time so I can complete the Brooklyn Half together with my OWP team. And the truth is, even before I was pregnant with Ara, I dreamed that someday I’d have a kid who could help cheer me across the finish line as I completed my next big race. I am very much looking forward to that!

I decided to run to raise money for the school because I want every child to be able to attend One World Project! Both my mother and sister work at One World Project and I am constantly hearing all these great things about the school.

I was inspired to run this year’s April 23 Brooklyn Half Marathon as a way to support fundraising efforts for One World Project, the wonderful  early childhood program and community that we were lucky enough to join in 2019. The skillful, warm, responsive and principled staff of One World has nurtured my kids and, frankly, me through their preschool and early elementary  years and the massive disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic. From the teddy bear project, where Biko and his 2 year old peers welcomed a group of shy stuffed animal newcomers to their classroom and wrote a song about treating them kindly, to the hours and hours of outdoor play both my kids were fortunate to experience during the peak of  COVID -19, and Biko’s fluent, beautifully accented Spanish, OWP is a very special place.  I am so happy to support their efforts to increase their no- and low-cost programming to welcome a more socioeconomically inclusive community of children and families.  Please support me in fundraising for OWP’s inclusive programs!

Otis & Biko
One World Project (OWP) is a wonderful early childhood program and community that has nurtured both Otis and Biko since 2019 and been an anchor for our family through the COVID pandemic.  Otis and Biko will run the OWP Fun Run on April 22nd (Biko‘s 6th birthday) and we’d love your support in helping fundraise so that One World Project can continue to expand their UPK and other inclusive programs.   Here is what Otis and Biko have to say about their favorite things about OWP:
  • Otis: “My favorite thing about One World is that the teachers are very supportive.  Domingo was like a second  dad to me.”
  • Biko: “My favorite thing about One World is that they have afterschool because people who don’t go to One World anymore can still go to One World for afterschool….and I like that they speak a different language and that you can learn Spanish.”

Hello Friends and Family,

This April, I’m dusting off my running shoes and joining parents from Mia’s pre-school in running the Brooklyn Half Marathon to raise funds for the school, One World Project. https://www.oneworldproject.org/ (At OWP’s web-page, that’s Mia in the pink hooded jacket). As a Spanish emersion pre-school, OWP has helped reinforce our (mostly Claudia’s ) use of Spanish at home. Also, it’s located on our street, which has been very helpful for our NYC commutes!

Each runner has been asked to raise $1,000, but I hope to exceed that amount with your help! Your contribution will support OWP’s scholarship program for neighborhood children who would otherwise not be able to attend.

Thank you for your support!

Patrick, Claudia and Mariana (“Mia”)

Friends & Family,

We are excited to run in support of One World Project (OWP), our kid’s amazing Spanish-immersion school. OWP has created a community that promotes understanding, inclusivity, and collaboration. At its core, the staff and teachers are genuinely invested in our children’s development. They foster a safe environment for our children to learn, inquire, and explore.

I have signed up to run the Brooklyn Half this Spring and our kiddo will be running a 1/2 mile fun run. Funds raised will go toward One World’s scholarship to help increase accessibility to more families. Please consider contributing to this amazing community! Thank you!

Thank you!
Rachel

Ramona will take part in a fun run to support her school, where she has learned the foundations of Spanish, created a ton of great artwork, and enjoyed playing in the yard and dancing in music classes. She even prefers singing in Spanish to English these days. One World Project is a special place and we’re so happy to be part of this community

I am going to run for the second time motivated by the children of our school and by how the One World Project community encourages me to participate and enjoy this type of activities.

My name is Sara, and I am a teacher of Montañas 🏔️. Working at OWP had been a beautiful experience. I ran the half marathon because every child deserves a bright, quality education. At OWP, the teacher is committed to supporting children from different backgrounds. They are passionate, professional, and caring, and they love what we do.   I hope that through this fundraiser, many children will be able to be part of this beautiful community dedicated to serving children regardless of their socioeconomic status. –

One World Project is a special place in our corner of Brooklyn. It’s where Jack has been lucky enough to first go to school and experience warmth and love from their amazing teachers, plant vegetables in their garden, scoot endlessly on their patio and even learn a little Spanish along the way. To support this amazing school and ensure more access to more kids to all the amazing things OWP does Jack’s going to be doing his first race – The OWP 1/2 Mile Fun Run on April 22nd. He’s a very keen runner (mostly just running away from us in the park!) so he’s excited to do this with all his friends. And to show her support Sarah’s going to be running the Brooklyn Half Marathon on April 23rd.

Please support Jack & Sarah as they run/walk/scoot to the finish line in support of One World Project!

Marathon Day has always been one of our favorite days in New York City.  We love to go to 4th Avenue and cheer on the racers and marvel at the great enthusiasm brought by everyone to the race – old and young; fast and slow; big and small.

After so many years of spectating we are ready to take the plug and run the half on April 23.  We can’t think of a better cause than One World Project to support on run day.

I’m super excited to be running my first half marathon, and there’s a reason why I’m doing this now: the funds raised will support the scholarship fund of One World Project, an incredible school and community. You can walk by the school and absorb what a special environment it is even from the outside…garden beds planted by the children and labeled en español, simple but imaginative shelters and nooks that beckon for creative play. When you add in the teachers, who are community-minded educators from all over the Spanish-speaking world, an educational philosophy that promotes multilingualism and social emotional development, and the kids themselves, hailing from all kinds of beautiful families, well, it’s magic.

My son, Cove, has thrived at OWP over the last year and a half, and it’s my strong belief that many more kids deserve this life-changing start to their educational experience. Contributing to the school’s 10th anniversary fundraiser will extend this opportunity to many more families, advancing educational equity and diversity at a life stage that truly matters.

Further, I’m running this April 23rd because I can (thank you to my multiple physical therapists of recent years!) This race is dedicated to my dad, who was a low-speed, low-mileage but dogged runner who rarely missed a day. He departed almost exactly the day of the event (22 years ago) and I think he would consider his Suey pacing/plodding by the Brooklyn waterfront pretty freakin’ cool.

We all have many causes that are dear to us and budgets that sure aren’t infinite. Whether or not you can contribute to this [tax-deductible] initiative, I thank you for reading this and being part of my wonderful community and support system.

¡Mil gracias!

We are a group of parents, teachers, administrators, alumni, and students doing the Brooklyn Half and Fun Run for One World Project, our beloved school.

One World Project was born in 2012 with the aim of promoting cultural understanding and environmental sustainability through meaningful multilingual community, after school, camp, and early childhood education programs. OWP’s Spanish-immersion program started with eight children in our Director Joanne’s home and has since grown to serve more than 100 families annually. A labor of love, OWP has become a child-centered school dedicated to play and a community center informed by the rights and responsibilities associated with living in an interconnected, global world of immense diversity. It is also a reaction to the most problematic issues of today’s world – hate, fear, and arrogance and a belief that the best way to tackle these issues is by planting seeds of empathy, collaborative problem solving, and community action.

Please join us in supporting One World Project by giving to our efforts to run the Brooklyn Half Marathon and Fun Run.

Please donate whatever you can. Any amount is deeply appreciated. No donation is too small or too big.

We are training for the Brooklyn Half Marathon and the OWP Fun Run to support One World Project, the incredible preschool that has been central to our family since 2019. The community of parents and teachers has helped us all grow in so many ways, helping the kids become confident, bi-lingual individuals, and helping the grownups learn to support them as best we can. Creating a space like this is incredibly difficult, especially in the pressurized city environment (not to mention the pandemic), but they have succeeded! We three are running because OWP has been so, so important to our family and we want to help sustain this wonderful place for all the other families around us, and the families who will come in the future.

One World Project is a special place in our corner of Brooklyn. It’s where Violet goes to school for 2K, and will continue to go to preschool.

Vy looks forward to going to school every day, and she always talks about the fun and fascinating things she does there, like hunting for worms, making ALL kinds of art, playing with her friends and teachers, dancing and playing instruments at music class, and learning Español!

She’s excited that the kids can now participate in an event that they themselves can raise money for and ensure that kids (like her little sister Lilly) can enjoy all the amazing things OWP does everyday by running the OWP 1/2 Mile Fun Run on April 22nd.

Please support Violet as she runs/walks/scoots to the finish line in support of One World Project!

This year it isn’t just parents and teachers running on race weekend – One World Project is having a Fun Run for kids, and Violeta is running to raise money for the school she loves!

She’ll be running a 1/2 mile around the block of their school the day before Liz and many other parents and teachers run the 1/2 Marathon.
You can learn more about why Liz is running, and why this school means so much to our family here:  https://donate.oneworldproject.org/team_member/liz-ligon-papapietro/
So if you have the means, whether you give to Violeta’s page or Liz’s page, we are hoping to help the school raise $100,000 for this fun and special 10th Anniversary fundraiser.
Gracias from my family and many others!

Dear friends and family,

On April 22nd, Willie (6) and Patpat (4) will attempt the impossible – a half-mile Fun Run with their classmates around our block to raise money for their amazing school, One World Project.

They’ve been training on this course their entire lives, but at 2640 feet long – dangers abound. Can they avoid the uneven sidewalks? The distractions of friends and neighbors? The dogs? The trampolines? Or the most sinister obstacle – the siren song of the bodega (and its wall of candy and freezer of ice cream sandwiches) to complete the loop from their school, around our block and back again?

We’re expecting to use around 45 bandaids, hear 27 ‘is this over yets,’ 2 outfit changes and possibly a scooter mid-course swap out, but every last hangnail will be worth it to support OWP.

OWP is a Spanish immersion preschool that has been central to our family since 2019. Both Willie and Patrick have grown and developed meaningful relationships, being nurtured and cared for by amazing teachers, staff and community. Unfortunately, the DOE’s reimbursement rate for its Universal Pre-K program does not cover the costs that make the program so special (music classes, a community garden, healthcare for the staff.) OWP is committed to keeping its UPK program at no cost to families but it cannot do it without additional financial support.

Please join us in supporting OWP and, if you are able, donating to the Fun Run fundraiser (tax deductible) to support this very special place to ensure it can continue to enrich our community.

No donation amount is too small. Our goal is to have fun and raise $10,000 to honor OWP’s 10th Anniversary!

Thank you so much,
Willie & Patpat (and family)

One World Project is a special place in our corner of Brooklyn! As parents, we’ve been so moved by the efforts that OWP makes to build a diverse community that nurtures Ziva’s curiosity, zest for life, and creativity.  She plants seeds in their garden, scoots on their patio, goes on adventures in Prospect Park, and makes incredible artistic creations!

Ziva comes home excited to share about how she and her friends spent their days. She takes lessons from school home as well — she reminds us of how important it is for us to stop and breathe when we get frustrated, upset or worked up at home.  And, on top of that, she’s developing a love of Spanish along the way!

We now have the opportunity to come out for a day and build communal support for OWP on April 22 by running the ½ mile Fun Run. We hope you’ll join us in supporting this special school and community institution.

2022 Stories

I’m running the Brooklyn Half Marathon to raise money for my daughter Esme’s amazing Spanish immersion preschool, One World Project, and soon to be my son Emmett’s as well. One World Project has been an amazing school for Esme, focused on fostering social emotional development, Spanish language abilities and engagement with our community. They have been amazing during the pandemic and have taken on a number of extra costs to support staff and teachers including providing regular testing, and compensating staff and teachers for all sick time and school closures. Please help support the school in these challenging times if you can. Thank you!

Alex is a native New Yorker who started her career in the art world after studying Art History at Pratt Institute. While she loved being around art, she felt something was missing. Growing up, Alex watched her mother teach in her classroom as a bilingual educator working in NYC public schools. She missed the interactions she had with younger children and decided that she would combine her passion for working with children with her love of art.

While earning her Master’s degree in Art and Design Education, Alex worked in the Education department at the Bronx Museum of the Arts where she oversaw activities during the museum’s seasonal family events and created bilingual educational videos. She is passionate about making modern and contemporary art accessible during early childhood as well as integrating the visual arts into children’s learning.

We’re running a half marathon!  There’s no better way to kick off 2022 than by getting in shape and getting outside.

We’re running to raise money for Charlie’s AMAZING preschool.  One World Project is a Spanish immersion preschool right in our neighborhood, Charlie is in the UPK class.  There is nothing Alexis’ mom would have loved more than seeing her love of language teaching, thematic units and Spanish songs come to life for Charlie.  OWP is everything she stood for – teachers model the values of authenticity, curiosity, collaboration and stewardship in every single classroom every day.  We’re lucky to be part of the One World Project community and feel excited to take on this challenge to help raise funds to bridge the gap between what the DOE provides for UPK and what the program One World offers.

As a group of 40+ OWP parents we are committed to raise $50,000. Please contribute what you can, every dollar counts.

I’m running 13.1 miles to support One World Project, my daughter’s outstanding school. Though I never imagined running a half marathon, I’m motivated to support this special educational community and set a challenge for myself at a time when so much feels beyond my control.

One World Project fosters cultural awareness, multilingualism, and social emotional development through inquiry-based learning. This small but mighty school is all heart, and I’ve watched my older daughter Sasha blossom here in preschool and pre-K. OWP’s commitment to equity, dedicated teachers, and student-centered approach give each child the chance to explore their interests and shine bright. As a former teacher, I’m a firm believer that kids who learn compassion, self-awareness, and a respect for others and the planet are better equipped to learn everything else. That’s what OWP is all about—and according to Sasha, it’s also really fun.

During the past two topsy turvy years, the teachers and administrators at OWP have created an environment that’s safe, nurturing, and secure in every sense. Please join me in supporting this bilingual and multicultural community so that the program can continue at full capacity. If you are able, give what you can so that more kids of all backgrounds can attend and teachers receive extra support. I told my daughters I’m in a big race and I got new running shoes—there’s no backing out now!

One World Project has been a part of my family for over 5 years. It has touched our lives in many ways beyond our daughter’s amazing education there. OWP is our friends, our neighborhood, our community and a huge part of the way we interact with our little world in Brooklyn. I’m running because it’s fun, and because One World Project is important, and we’re raising money together so that OWP can continue to be a huge part of the lives of so many.
Please consider making a donation so that OWP can continue to support the community with immersion education via scholarships and investing in OWP educators.

After chasing Pablo around for more than four years without getting any medals, I decided to put all that physical and mental training to good use and sign up for a half marathon in the Spring of 2022. It will be my first endurance event since 2017 – I have tried to run since but could not make it stick. This time is different. My reasons for running are many; endorphins, saving money on the gym, and not having to buy more roomy clothes. But what really pushed me to make the commitment this time is the wonderful community that has become near and dear to our family since Pablo started attending One World Project last year for their 3s program and this year for Universal PreK.
Last year was incredibly hard for everyone – especially schools. Very quickly, they had to reinvent themselves to keep children safe and to be able to keep their programs open. It was no different for OWP. They have done everything in their power to make health a priority without compromising the wonderful education experience they provide. They have re-designed exterior spaces as classrooms, installed extra sinks, and hired additional teachers to avoid cross-sharing, etc. All these changes are necessary and need to stay. They also cost a lot of money, which is why I am asking you to please help our team raise $50,000. Every little bit helps and it will go a long way in keeping our children safe and excited about learning.

Muchas gracias!

Carla

I’m running 13.1 miles to celebrate having baby #3 and to raise money for my kid’s amazing preschool, One World Project.

When the world shifted in March 2020 it put a lot of things in perspective, most notably how vital our schools are for our kids (and us parents too!). When our girls were able to return to school in September 2020, not only was I appreciative that they were back to some sort of “normal” routine, but I was so so thankful at how everyone at their school — from the Executive Director to their teachers — did everything to keep them safe.

All the extra safety measures and other considerations come at a big financial cost, which is why I’m leading this running team to run the Brooklyn Half Marathon and raise $50,000. If you’re able to give, please give what you can. It will ensure the programs can continue without cutting any corners. A lot of little preschoolers will appreciate your generosity (and their parents will too!!).

This year, I’m excited to train for the Brooklyn half marathon in support of my local preschool, One World Project.  Because of this incredible school right on my street, I have discovered the most inspirational parents, teachers and community members right on my own block! I am so grateful to have such wonderful neighbors and community, and am honored to contribute!

I love running and love my sister so I signed up to run the Brooklyn Half Marathon with her to support the beautiful school she started in 2012 called One World Project.  All funds raised will support OWP’s scholarship program to make high quality Spanish-immersion programs available to more families.  Here’s the fundraising page should you want to make a donation to support this important cause.

Hi there, I’m going to be running a half marathon to raise money for Luke’s preschool, One World Project. As you may know, running is a relatively new thing for me, and I have never run a race before, certainly not a (half) marathon, but it’s for a very good cause so I’m giving it a go!

One World Project (OWP) has been a wonderful part of Luke’s life for over a year now, it’s his first school experience, a place where he has made great friends, and been cared for and challenged by amazing teachers who have taught him Spanish as well as fostered his creativity and emotional growth. We feel very lucky to be a part of it.

Because of the extra expense of all the precautions and measures the school has taken to keep everyone safe during Covid, as well as a deficit due to reduced funding for UPK at private facilities, OWP is in dire need of funds. If you have the means, please donate to help us reach our goal, and help keep this special place afloat. I appreciate anything you can give, and Luke does too. 🙂

I’m a preschool teacher, writer and mama to two. I’m running 13.1 miles to raise money for my first kiddo’s beloved former preschool, One World Project (OWP). OWP is full of heart-centered teachers and staff and is galvanized by a mission to foster bilingualism, social emotional development and greater equity through play and inquiry. It is a truly special and singular place.

I want to support OWP right now for many reasons.

First, the OWP team has been working tirelessly in extremely trying times to continue their vital work while keeping children, families and teachers safe. Navigating the pandemic so conscientiously is an admirable, and yet costly, endeavor and they need financial support right now more than ever.

Second, OWP has been putting a lot of effort and time into ensuring that children of all socio-economic backgrounds can attend. As an early childhood educator who cares deeply about advancing equity, I am grateful for the school’s commitment to broadening its reach. All children deserve access to the early childhood experiences that help them discover and love who they are.

If you’re able to give, please give what you can. It will ensure One World Project can continue to offer children joyful learning experiences; pay its teachers generous wages; and empower students of every background for a long time to come.

We’re running 13.1 miles to celebrate turning 40 with 4 (mostly) functional knees between us, and to raise money for One World Project.

We’re so lucky to be part of the One World Project community. It’s an incredible school, and the teachers and staff there have gone above and beyond to keep our son and the rest of the kids there learning, growing, and safe throughout the pandemic. All the extra safety measures and other considerations come at a big financial cost, which is why we’re running the Brooklyn Half Marathon and helping raise $50,000. If you’re able to give, please give what you can. It will ensure OWP’s programs can continue without cutting any corners.

THE EVENT

On April 24th, 2022 we will join thousands of half marathoners for an epic running journey.

The iconic new route starts in North Brooklyn and winds around the waterfront taking you under the historic Williamsburg, Manhattan, and Brooklyn Bridges. From there, the route heads up the grand concourses of Fulton Street & Flatbush Avenue before passing through Grand Army Plaza and into historic brownstone Brooklyn. We will turn into Prospect Park at mile 10 to complete our 13.2 miles.

THE CAUSE

With love and care we have built a nurturing school and community center committed to learning. We want to sustain what makes OWP so special even in the midst of a pandemic and we want to grow our scholarship fund so that OWP is accessible to more families. Together we’ll be working to raise $50,000.

We truly appreciate anything you are able to give.

I am 100% not-a-runner. Now that that’s out of the way, I want you to know that I made the decision to run in the 2022 Brooklyn Half-Marathon in order to raise money for a very worthy cause: I am supporting the One World Project, which is a Spanish-immersion preschool, after-school, and camp program that serves children between the ages of 2- and 12-years-old. My 3-year-old daughter Elena attends this school, and for anyone who has heard her sing the “Dias de la Semana” song, you know that this program offers an amazing language immersion resource for the central Brooklyn community, especially at a time when access to high-quality early education and care is becoming harder to fund and sustain. One hundred percent of the donations will go to offset the school’s roughly $250,000 in annual operating costs and support their ability to offer free Spanish-language universal Pre-K slots to the central Brooklyn community.
Thank you so much for your support, and look for me on Strava for news and training updates!

Hello friends and family! This April I will be running a half marathon to raise money for Silas’s Preschool, One World Project (OWP.) OWP is a Spanish immersion, non-profit, community based organization. They work to combine cultural understanding and environmental sustainability through a meaningful multilingual community. The raised funds will go both to scholarships that will allow more families access to the school and to support the school’s teachers. It’s been amazing pushing myself to run further every week and I’m grateful to do it while supporting this wonderful organization. If you are able to help, please give what you can.

Hola friends and family!

I am running (perhaps dancing, walking, wiggling- hopefully not crawling) the Brooklyn Half Marathon in April to raise money for Mac and Liam’s Spanish immersion preschool -One World Project located in our Brooklyn neighborhood.

We are so thankful that our children and family have been part of the One World community. We are especially grateful for how thoughtful and creative the school has been in ensuring children have a way to connect and learn safely during the pandemic.

Please give what you can so the school has the necessary funds to support its amazing teachers and grow its scholarship program.

Besos,
Elizabeth

I am running the Brooklyn half marathon in April to help fundraise for One World Project. This amazing preschool has been a safe haven for both Miles and Stella during these crazy times, always putting our children and their safety first without compromising the important experience of the first years of school.

OWP is a Spanish immersion school that puts an emphasis on community, cultural awareness and a constant commitment to learning. This fundraiser is designed to raise funds for OWP’s scholarship fund to ensure inclusivity and the ability for all children from all areas to get an amazing education.

Thank you for contributing anything you can!

Friends and family, in April I’ll be running the Brooklyn Half Marathon to support Wila’s preschool, One World Project.  OWP is a Spanish immersion preschool that truly prioritizes the growth and learning of children as well as building community.  Funds raised will go both to scholarships that will allow more families access to the school and to support the school’s teachers.

I’m so excited to run again and to do it in support of OWP gives me extra motivation and pride.  If you can, please help us to meet our fundraising goal.

I’m excited to be part of this effort to support One World, where my children have had wonderful experiences and formed enduring friendships.

I am running the Brooklyn Half Marathon, my first race in 5 years, to support One World Project–Camila’s amazing preschool. OWP is an incredibly supportive bilingual preschool and community where Camila thrives and loves to go every morning. Like many schools during COVID they’ve struggled to keep the doors open and the children safe while paying the wonderful teachers a livable wage. 100% of the proceeds from this fundraiser will support the increased operating costs for COVID safety measures and universal PRE-K which the DOE’s reimbursement does not sufficiently cover.  Please consider supporting this wonderful community for Camila and other Brooklyn children.  Thank you!!!

I’m running the Brooklyn Half-Marathon to raise money for my daughter, Esme’s amazing preschool, One World Project (Walter is an alumni) that focuses on Spanish Immersion and Environmental Education.

One World Project has an awesome school garden, provides scholarships for low-income families, and on top of that Covid19 safety measures have proven to come at a big financial cost, which is why I’m joining their running team to run the Brooklyn Half Marathon and raise $50,000. If you’re able to give, please give what you can. It will ensure the programs can continue without cutting any corners. A lot of little preschoolers will appreciate your generosity.

I’m running a (half) marathon!

I am running 13.1 miles in support of my little humans (Emma, 5 and Lukas, 2) and to support the magical school that has helped nurture and keep them safe throughout the pandemic.

The pandemic has presented many challenges, and extra safety measures and considerations come with a significant financial cost to schools.
Our escuelita needs us, and we hope you’ll join us in supporting One World Project by donating to our fundraising efforts.
GRACIAS!
Abrazos,
Ava, Luna, Lilit and Jeremy

As I’m sure you are aware, I am not a runner.  In fact my mantra has always been only run when chased.  The fact that I signed up to run the Brooklyn Half-Marathon reflects my deep love for One World Project and strong belief in what we are doing here.

We’re running 13.1 miles to raise money for our toddler’s wonderful preschool, One World Project. It’s exactly the kind of environment that all kids need: one that fosters creativity, collaboration, and a love for learning. Your donation will help OWP continue its mission amidst all the added pressures that the pandemic has placed upon educators. Thank you!

I’m running the half marathon to support my son’s wonderful preschool, One World Project (OWP).

Our family could not have gotten through 2020 without OWP. Our son started school there in September 2020 and it changed all of our lives. OWP gave him a routine and a loving community to feel safe during very uncertain times. In December of 2020 my mother unexpectedly passed away from a rare medical condition and our family felt like it was falling apart. We turned to OWP to support our son during this difficult time, and not only did they help him, but they helped me as well. Every day when I arrived at pickup the teachers would check in on us to see how we were doing and offered to help in any way possible. We honestly would not have made it through the year without their support.

Not only has OWP been emotionally supportive but they have worked very hard to make the school safe for the children. They have undertaken a huge financial cost to make sure the school has proper covid-safety precautions, including air filtration, extra sinks and outfitting the outdoor spaces so that the children can spend more time outside. Collectively, we are hoping to raise $50,000 to make sure the program continues for children, like our daughter who will be attending next year. If you’re able to give, please give what you can.

I ran my first race in memory of my mother almost 20 years ago, and now I’m running my first race as a mother!
The first was exactly 1 year from the day that my mom passed away after over a decade of cancer, and I like to think that health was her last gift to me. I started running to train for that race, and in no small way, it changed my life – physically of course, but it also allowed for time and reflection and became a way for me to feel closer to her.  She was known for her unstoppable positive energy so I would try to channel that energy as running motivation.
I stopped running 3 years ago, a few months before my daughter burst into our lives in the back seat of our car on the way to the hospital.  And obviously in no small way, my life changed again!
And then March 2020 changed life for all of us, and we all have our own unique experiences of the challenges during this collective covid era.
A very long year & a half into the pandemic, our daughter started the 2’s program at One World Project, a Spanish immersion preschool that is awesome in all kinds of ways, and it turns out, she was more than ready to be with other people after SOOO much time at home with just us.  OWP has been transformative and nurturing, and she comes home every day excited and talking nonstop in Spanish and English about her classmates and new things she has learned from her caring teachers – music and nature and art and culture. And it all largely takes place outdoors, which is one of the incredible safety measures the school put in place for covid – they redesigned exterior spaces as classrooms, installed extra sinks, hired additional teachers and staff for reduced sized classes, etc. But taking on these extra precautions along with a deficit from reduced funding for Universal Pre-K at private facilities has put financial stress on the school.
In addition, OWP is committed to ensuring that children of all socio-economic backgrounds can attend and has developed a scholarship program to make this early educational experience accessible to more families.
So with the hope of keeping OWP’s programming intact and building a robust scholarship fund, a group of over 50 parents and teachers have signed up to run the Brooklyn Half Marathon to raise funds for the school!  And since I stopped running because of my daughter when I was pregnant, I am excited to start running again for her – both to raise money for this special place and to try to share with her the gift of health that was such a connection for me to my mom.
And even though it feels impossible to start running again, I keep telling myself that if I can have a baby on the West Side Highway, maybe I can get back in shape and run a half marathon!
Right now it seems like a very big challenge.
But I do also have a little help in training beyond the amazing team that you can read about on these pages – whenever we’re going somewhere outside, my daughter asks to hold my hand and run with her down the sidewalk for blocks and blocks. So my training has already begun with her help, and she has become my new unstoppable positive energy motivator. : )
If you have the means, please consider donating.  Gracias from our family and many others!

Hi! My name is Lou Cespedes. I turn 50 this year and I am grateful for my health, for the health of our child, and for her growth.

We have One World Project to thank for so much of the brightness in what has otherwise been a very challenging year. I’m running the Brooklyn full marathon and I am sharing this experience with so many other exceptional parents and teachers to bring support to this community school, and to highlight the importance of fair funding for these educational experiences our children enjoy.

I have decided to train for the Brooklyn Half Marathon to help raise money for pandemic-related costs for Itzy’s wonderful preschool, One World Project! I am turning 45 this March, and a half-marathon also seemed like a good goal to motivate me to get in shape! (I’m not a runner, so we’ll see how it goes!)

Itzy started attending One World Project pre-pandemic for Spanish story time when she was 18 months old, continued on to the 2’s program last year and the 3’s program this year. She will attend Pre-K at One World next year! Itzy is thriving at this Spanish-language school where they do an outstanding job of building community and fostering children’s curiosity, creativity and kindness.

The pandemic has been particularly challenging for schools, and OWP is no exception. With remarkable speed, the administration made hard decisions and invested financially in order to keep children safe and to be able to keep classes open. They have done everything in their power to make health a priority without compromising the wonderful education experience they provide. They redesigned exterior spaces as classrooms, installed air filters and extra sinks and hired additional teachers to avoid cross-sharing between classes.

All of these changes cost a lot of money, which is why I am asking you to please help our OWP Half Marathon team raise $50,000. Every little bit helps and it will go a long way in keeping our children safe while staying connected to community and excited about learning!

With appreciation,

Mara

I am running the Brooklyn Half Marathon on April 24th to celebrate all that my daughter Lenna has overcome and to raise money for her amazing school, One World Project.

Lenna was born with a benign lung tumor that required multiple surgeries and COVID-like precautions and restrictions BEFORE the time of COVID. She constantly talked about the day she would be able to go to school and have teachers and friends. Her dream came true when she started preschool at OWP in September 2021. She is thriving, has made great friends, and been nurtured by amazing teachers who have taught her Spanish as well as fostered her creativity and emotional growth.

In the face of the pandemic the OWP team has gone above and beyond to ensure the kids can continue to learn and grow safely. They have re-designed outdoor spaces as classrooms, installed extra sinks, hired additional teachers to maintain pods, etc. All the extra safety measures come at a big financial cost and are straining the school as the pandemic has stretched on for so long.

OWP is also committed to economic diversity in the classroom. In order to not compromise this mission OWP is raising funds to continue their scholarship fund to allow them to welcome more families irrespective of their economic means.

If you’re able to give, please give what you can. Every little bit helps and it will ensure OWP can continue to make health and safety a priority without compromising the quality of education, pay teachers generous wages, and welcome students of every background.

¡Sí Se Puede!

In April 2022 I will be running the Brooklyn half marathon to raise money for One World Project (OWP), a place dear to my heart.
OWP is where our son Kai went to preschool, starting when he was just two. At first we were drawn to the school for its Spanish immersion program, but we quickly realized it offers so much more. OWP provides a safe and nurturing space for children to learn, grow and play. We feel very lucky to be part of the community that OWP has created. Even though Kai is no longer there, it continues to be an important part of our lives because of the friendships we have made.
It takes a lot to offer such high quality programming, especially during such challenging times.
Together, our goal is to raise $50,000. Please join me in giving what you can to help support this amazing place. Any amount helps!
Mil gracias!
Michel

Michelle Morales was born and raised in New York City, but spent her childhood summers and two years of her adolescence in her other hometown of Barranquilla, Colombia.

Michelle holds a bachelors degree in psychology from New York University, and is currently pursuing her Masters in early childhood education at Hunter College. An avid gardener in her spare time, she helped lead the establishment and upkeep of the landscaping and garden at One World Project, the continued care of which is now a favorite part of every class’s curriculum and activities.

She credits her degree in psychology with recognizing the importance of social-emotional learning in the classroom, while her current studies elucidate the importance of meaningful interactions for learning. “Teaching found me,” she says. “Being a Spanish speaker gave me this opportunity, and the joy and excitement of learning alongside the children keeps me going.”

Raquel is from Granada, in southern Spain. She discovered her passion for teaching early in high school when she started tutoring math, science and studying skills.

Later she received a Master’s Degree in Psychology and worked in a hospital psychiatry department assisting researchers, psychiatrists and psychologists before moving to NYC.

“I was lucky to discover OWP after moving to NYC – one of the rare places sharing many of my principles and values, encouraging children to be themselves, and requiring us to do our part with empathy and assertively.”

I am running to raise money to support One World Project, an incredible Spanish immersion preschool, camp and community center in Brooklyn that remains very close to our hearts.

Our daughter Lara attended OWP for preschool, after school, summer camp, and weekend music classes – any and every program we could possibly join! The staff and teachers have created the most nurturing and engaging environment, which was truly a second home for Lara during those important early years. We were so grateful when we moved back to Brooklyn to find a multilingual school with a global perspective where she could thrive. Though Lara is no longer a student there, as a family we still feel very much a part of this amazing community.

I am running the Brooklyn Half Marathon in April along with a wonderful team of teachers, administrators, and parents. Together, our goal is to raise $50,000 to support One World Project’s programming and scholarships. I hope you will join me by making a gift of any amount in support of this exceptional school. We would be so grateful.

Marathon Day has always been one of our favorite days in New York.  We love to go to 4th Avenue and cheer on the racers and marvel at the great enthusiasm brought by everyone to the race – old and young; fast and slow; big and small.

After so many years of spectating we are ready to take the plug and run the half on April 24.  We can’t think of a better cause than One World Project to support on run day.

I am running to support access to high quality, engaging and nurturing Bilingual early childhood education. My daughter attended One World Project during a very critical time in her life. Her teachers and administrators provided the support, responsiveness and love she needed, even through the most difficult moments. We want every child to have the opportunity to be part of this amazing, unique and, in our case, life changing community. I am running to support One World’s mission to increase economic diversity in their classrooms through a robust and sustained scholarship program.

We have been blown away by the dedication of One World Project, where Bodhi went for preschool and pre-K, to kids and families throughout the pandemic. We are so thankful for everything that One World did to create a sense of normalcy and safety for Bodhi. At One World, Bodhi learned a love for exploration and learning, that he is an important part of a special community and that he can do hard things.

Now, One World is fundraising to 1) pay for the extraordinary additional costs of running a school during a pandemic and 2) fund a scholarship to fulfill One World’s commitment to socioeconomic equity and inclusion. When Rick suggested that we run the Brooklyn Half Marathon together to help One World raise money, Tanya said: “Hell no!” – Tanya’s reaction to any suggestion of running. But we couldn’t turn down an opportunity to support a special neighborhood place and source of support to families that does amazing things every day. For community, relationships and gratitude for the special places that shape our lives and anchor our neighborhoods.

We did it. What an amazing day. We came together and tackled 13.2 miles and have raised more than $65,000 for One World Project. The funds raised will support One World Project’s scholarship fund.

We are a group of parents, teachers and administrators doing the Brooklyn Half for the kids of One World Project, our beloved school.

Please join us in supporting One World Project by giving to our efforts to run the Brooklyn Half Marathon.

Please donate whatever you can. Any amount is deeply appreciated. No donation is too small or too big.

We moved to Windsor Terrace because of an amazing little Spanish immersion nursery school called One World Project.  We fell in love with OWP because of their inquiry based philosophy of education, their commitment to the community, the Spanish language focus, and of course that they offered universal pre-k. We could not have imagined how great a decision this would end up being for us.

OWP is the center of our community. Rafa and Mila have both developed such a strong social and emotional foundation, a love for learning, and a foundational understanding of the Spanish language. As a family we have made lifelong friends.

Like so many small endeavors of its kind, OWP has struggled due to the pandemic. As a community, the fitting decision was made to commit to a healthy goal while raising funds to support OWP. I cannot wait to run this half marathon alongside so many friends, fellow OWP parents, teachers, staff and administrators!

I hope you will consider donating what you can for a cause that is very special to our family and friends!

Eighteen years ago I ran my first marathon in honor of my dad who died of cancer! It was the hardest thing I could think of doing and it was so fulfilling to train, make friends and raise money to fight Leukemia. After these past two years, I am ready to meet this challenge again to run 13.1 miles.  Everything changed and values were crystallized for our family. I want to celebrate my family’s resilience and health by conquering another goal.

We registered for the Brooklyn half-marathon to raise funds for Victoria’s school and are excited to have an excuse to get back into running after a long hiatus. (Full disclosure: Years of galloping have taken a toll on Christian’s joints and he just found out that he might need to undergo hip surgery soon, in which case Veronica would be the family’s only representative at this year’s race.)

Gabriel spent two years at One World project, immediately followed by Victoria, who is now in her second year there. We can’t say enough good things about this gem of a school, which provides, in addition to Spanish immersion, a warm and nurturing environment where children are given plenty of space by the school’s wonderful teachers to explore their interests.

The school has weathered the pandemic amazingly well but has, like many, suffered from it, needing to decrease class sizes and increase staff to handle all the logistical complications. It is intent on keeping scholarships available to less privileged families and the goal of this fundraising effort is to replenish its scholarship fund. We hope you’ll help us support this worthy cause! No amount is too small. Thanks in advance!
